Interesting Facts about Amethyst:
The beautiful purple you see is due to the iron in the quartz coming in contact with radiation for a long period of time. This causes the oxidation of the mineral surrounding the crystal and resulting in only certain wavelengths being absorbed. This process creates a variety of color from light pinks to deep purples.
The word amethyst is believed to originate from the Greek word “Amethustos”, “a” meaning “not” and “methustos” meaning “intoxicated”. Wealthy Greeks who wanted to stay sober were said to have goblets made out of amethyst. They used the purple hue of the crystal to fool guests into believing the water was a red wine.
