Interesting fact about the Red Eared Slider:
The Red Eared Slider, also known as Trachemys scripta elgans, is named after the striking red stripe on it’s head. While the red stripe is placed where the ears should be, this semi-aquatic animal actually does not have ears. Instead they have an internal eardrum that is covered by a thin layer of skin called the tympanum, this helps the turtle pick up vibrations underwater.
While the Red Eared Slider is a common household pet for many reptile enthusiast, they have become one of the most invasive species in world. This is due to unauthorized releasing of the pet, or the inability to care for one once they are matured adults.
