Interesting Fact about Sand Dollars:
The sand dollar originally got it’s name because of the resemblance of an old American or Spanish silver dollar. These sea creatures spend most of their life on the ocean floor buried in the sand or in clusters of other sand dollars. While most people only see the sand dollar when they are already beached on the shoreline, in the wild these creatures are purple or brown with tiny hairs called cilia all over their bodies. They use these tiny hairs to ferry their food from the top of their exoskeleton to their mouth below. Due to their diet consisting of small crustacean larva and algae, a sand dollar only has 5 teeth-like structures in their mouth. This can cause them to take 15 minutes to “chew” their food and 2 days to digest the food.
