Interesting facts about Sugar Starfish:
The Sugar Starfish is one of the most common of its genus and found in the Northern Atlantic ocean. Their bodies have legs that can range between 10-30 centimeters making them very skillful hunters on the ocean floor. They use their long appendages to pry mollusk shells open to get the animal inside, they only need a 1mm sized opening in order to do so. A female starfish is known to lay about 2.5 million eggs a year. These eggs go on a treacherous journey that can last up to 87 days before they find themselves on the ocean floor.
Back in 2011, on the eastern coastlines of England, there was a mass stranding of starfish and shells. A mass stranding is believed to be caused by tide changes or sea storms. This resulted in 4,000 starfish to be washed up on shore. This is not a unique phenomena, another notable mass stranding is one that happened after Hurricane Frank in 2015. This storm resulted in hundreds of starfish being beached on the shores of Hampshire.
