More about Sunset Moths:
Everyone’s favorite butterfly! You may be surprised to learn that this species is actually a moth, even though it flies during the day. In 1773 it was first described as a butterfly with the name Papilio rhipheus, which wasn’t proven incorrect for almost 50 years.
The sunset moth caterpillar host plant is toxic, much like the relationship between monarchs and milkweed. These toxins remain inside the caterpillar for the rest of their lives and the bright coloration of the wings warn predators of its toxicity. Also like the monarch, the sunset moth migrates between the eastern and western mountain ranges on the island of Madagascar.
